Map Canvas

Today I took a little break from special orders to work on a project for me, for the gallery wall that I am still putting together.  Until I get the wall together, my map canvas is sitting in my entryway on my old school desk.

I started with these items: a Montana map from a 1942 atlas, 2 canvases, some Matte Modge Podge.

Now, before you freak out on me for tearing a page out of an old atlas, let me say I have had this for about 10 years sitting in an old suitcase, it had pages coming out of it.  I like to use the originals of things when it is not something priceless. I don't want to make color copies and reproduce 100's of them--I like unique and one of a kind.  I like, this is the only one types of projects.

I folded the edges around the canvas to fit it to the canvas.

I coated both the back of the map (sorry Nebraskans) and the canvas with the Modge Podge.  I use matte because shiny things are hard to see when hanging on a wall.

I then placed the map and added a coat of Modge Podge over the top.  Next, I placed the second blank canvas on the top to create an canvas imprint in the glue.

Hmm, doesn't look quite right?  I tried a gain a few times, but I still didn't see a canvas imprint (I had read about doing this somewhere, can't remember where).

I let it dry and while I saw a little texture, I decided to add another coat of glue with a chip brush, stippling it on.

Get totally off task while glue is drying and look through senior year scrapbook.  Take pictures of your picture of the first day of senior year to share on throw back Thursday.

When it was dry, it still didn't have a lot of texture, but more than it did the first way of trying. You can see it here in the corner.

Project fail?

Nah, it has a great look to it and it is a cool, vintage map of the state I love!
