So, This is Happening...

Sooo... we have wanted a new house for awhile now.  We love our home and our neighbors, but we wanted a shop for me so our cars can stay warm in the winter (instead of my roadside finds and reclaimed wood), a place for our camper to be parked (not allowed in our subdivision), and a little more yard space.

We purchased a lovely, large lot in a nearby subdivision a few years ago.  And, it sat.  We couldn't decide on a house plan.  I knew there would be the inevitable arguments over what I wanted and what was in the budget.  There would be sidewalk, and fence, and sprinklers, and grass to put in.  We sold the lot, thankfully for almost double of what we paid for it.

That left us looking in a market that was increasing and picking up.  And then we found this:

An old 1932 schoolhouse that had been converted into a 3 bed/ 3 bath home.  One more birdie is fleeing my nest so fewer bedrooms are ideal.  The home was featured a few years back on HGTV's Rezoned show.

It  comes with a fully furnished, vented workshop with a dust collection system.
It has an unfinished Carriage House that will make a lovely occasional shop or VRBO.
It has a greenhouse.
It has original wavy glass windows and wood floors with small holes in it where the desks were bolted to the floor--makes me giddy!
It has projects--I can't wait to add some farmhouse industrial style to the kitchen and we will be saying goodbye to the pink carpeting. (This will be my daughter's attic bedroom--she is so excited to decorate it!)
We scrambled (so not easy getting a junker's home ready to sell) and got our house listed and sold and after receiving two offers, we are under contract.

And so a new adventure will begin in less than three weeks.  Yikes and yahoo!!  I can't wait to share with you the progress and projects as we work to make the schoolhouse our own.

  4. Congratulations! I can't wait to see what you do with your new home.

I grew up in a converted one-room school house. When my family bought it in 1966 there was no indoor plumbing, no ac & it was heated with an old coal burning stove. I remember using the outhouse for a few years before we had indoor plumbing installed - NOT fun. It looks like you will not be dealing with anything as drastic as that though!

  15. That shop is amazing. Makes mine look like a closet in comparison. At least I have a shop though & for that I am very thankful. Love the carriage house too. That could make a fabulous secret getaway place. You could go there for some alone time to get your creative juices flowing. Only 9 months in my "new" house with many projects ahead so I know how excited you are to get going on yours. Congratulations & good luck in your new home. Your Washington fan, Deb.

  27. What a small world!! I stumbled upon your blog looking for ideas for a simple step stool for the kids. Then I saw this post. We love this house!!! We saw it was for sale awhile back & were wishing we could buy it....though we'd love any house on that road since it's near our favorite fishing spot :) this one seems extra special! Congratulations, I hope your family really enjoys living there!!!
