5 Projects in a Week, Project 4, Upcycled Drawer Planter

I am running a little behind here with Project 4, but I hope it is worth the wait because it is my favorite so far.  If you are just tuning in, please check out project ONE HERE, TWO HERE, and THREE HERE!

I knew I wanted a planter with some height.  I had pots sitting in the luggage rack/crate holder I had made, but it didn't have the right feel and I had actually made that to sell at my next show.  I knew I had some stray drawers that would work well as planters and when I picked two, I came up with the A frame idea.  I definitely learned some lessons along the way--which I seem to be doing a lot of this week.  I have always been a hands-on learner.

I painted the drawers and cut 4 boards with a 15 degree angle on one end.  Fisrt lesson learned--play around with a SCRAP board to get the right angle.  I cut my original boards too many times getting the angle I wanted and had to start over with new ones.

Now this next step is definitely the Becky way of doing things.  I am sure I am supposed to use some math formula to figure this out or a square, but I simply lined the angled boards up along a straight board and lined up the top.

I measured up 8 inches on each board and drew a straight line across the boards.

I screwed the drawer from the inside into the legs.

I then measured again and screwed the smaller drawer into the legs on one side. UH HO Houston, we have a problem: the smaller drawer needs to be the same width as the bottom drawer.  See the gap in the lower right hand corner of this picture?

Remove upper drawer, cut two boards to add to the sides and glue them to drawer and paint them.  Drink iced tea while waiting for glue and paint to dry.

Reattach drawer.  Next I cut two trapezoids (see I did listen a little in geometry), and secure them to tops of the legs.

I added a handle, sanded lightly, drilled drain holes, and finished with a good coat of Minwax's Helsman's Spar urethane.

I planted it up, a little sparsely for now,

but it will fill in in no time.

I am happy with how the porch is turning out.

I hope you tune in tomorrow for my final project--what will it be?  it is a mystery to even me :)!

  1. This is lovely! It's one of my favorites, right up there w' the luggage rack/crate creation you posted recently. If I don't have drawers could I build some & maybe use sheet metal for the bottoms?

  2. I gotta come in again & say that I just love how all of these porch creations coordinate together. They're not identical but close enough in color & materials used to make them fit together in the space. Really, really cute pieces. You are amazing Becky.

  5. Wow, what a great week of beautiful Becky creations! The drawer planter is the icing on the cake! I love it so much. Thank you, Becky. I suppose one could use it as storage, if they don't do flowers. Maybe I should make two, one for inside and one for out :)

  11. love the idea, but was a little confused with the cut for 15 degrees. Was that for the bottom of the legs? Thanks
